Who is Apollo? Apollo has been a publisher of review criteria and clinical guidelines since 1989. Apollo criteria are currently in use by commercial and senior health plans (HMOs and PPOs), hospitals, IPAs, PHOs, medical groups, medical school faculty plans,  VA hospitals, U.S. military, and others in every U.S. State. Many of these entities have been reviewed and credentialed by JCAHO, NCQA or URAC. URAC recently has specifically approved the use of Apollo criteria as has BlueCross BlueShield of Illinois by contracted medical groups and IPAs. Apollo Managed Care Consultants ('Apollo')  is located in Santa Barbara, California.  

Apollo guidelines are also used in one or more countries in every continent except Antartica. Some of these countries, in addition to the US include Australia, Barbados, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Columbia , France, Germany, Hong Kong , Israel , Japan, Lebanon , Mexico , Panama, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea , Trinidad , Turkey and the United Kingdom.

 Apollo criteria have been developed by and under the direction of Margaret D. Bischel, MD. Contributors to the development process include many health plans and other entities who use Apollo criteria. All Apollo criteria and clinical guidelines are evidence-based and supported by extensive current references in the peer-reviewed literature.

 Criteria are reviewed and updated at least annually. The date of the most recent update or revision is listed in the manual following each topic. The peer reviewed literature is continuously scanned for new information that pertains to Apollo criteria.
